Explorations
in dance
- the avatars of Anita Ratnam

"Through dance I can be
every woman"
One of India's most respected classical dancers, Anita Ratnam is also choreographer, cultural commentator, actor-producer, writer and publisher.  Her early training was with Rajee Narayan and Adyar K Lakshman and later at the renowned Kalakshetra Dance Academy.  She trained in Bharatanatyam as well as the Kerala dance traditions of Kathakali and Mohiniattam.
Bold , imaginative and stunning, Anita's performances display a burning physicality.
Equipped with a Masters degree from the US in Theatre and TV, Anita returned to Chennai from New York after a ten year tenure as a successful TV producer and commentator with works which included the highly acclaimed Festival of India's TV series.

Her productions reflect a unique ability to combine the classical and contemporary, presenting Indian traditions in new avatars for modern audiences.  In a quest for universal harmony, she explores the full range of classical and contemporary dance, spanning east-west rhythms, purity and promiscuity, space-time equations and gender issues.

As a dancer Anita's movements are not bound by tradition, as she uses dance as a springboard to innovate, experiment, and provoke fresh thought.  Anita's imagination goes beyond the confines of her classical Indian dance training.

Her fluid choreography and repertoire of solo and group performances reflect both her Indian heritage and cross cultural experimentations.  Anita's impassioned artistry continues to enchant audiences while her focus on "creativity without borders" places the Indian performing arts centrestage on the international arena.
