The process of learning is very much like drawing a picture: first you sketch a few general outlines, and then move on to the minute details. Unfortunately, the set of outlines that are meant to make a tree will hardly be suitable for painting a dog, unless you are painting a caricature. A superficial and lazy mind does not wish to see that the basic outlines that serve for further development of, say, Odissi technique, is distinctly different from the outlines that are used in Bharatanatyam.

On a less material level, one would note that Bharatanatyam and Odissi require the dancer to master different elements: the element of fire for Bharatanatyam, and the element of water for Odissi.
