One of my friends suggested that silk costumes can indeed be washed instead of taking them to a dry cleaner's.

The costume should be washed gently in a lukewarm water, and then rinsed in distilled water/filtered rain water.

I was told that the main reason the silk looses its shine is not so much because of washing but because of ironing.
