In our case, the sponsor was the vocalist. The accompanists were sponsored from India. We (the parents) were asked to negotiate directly with the vocalist whose charges were exhorbitant ($4000 + travel + food and lodging).

After we had settled with the vocalist, we discovered from very reliable sources that the teacher had received a kick back from the vocalist. The teacher, in order to appear like her hands were clean, had simply put us through this charade of negotiating with the vocalist.
