Guru Dakshina & Thoughts

Living in America, I feel, I have a right to earn my living based on the circumstances which allows one to live a life. Parents may agree or not, they do spend lots of money on going on vacations, birthday parties, buying expensive properties. But when it comes to dance teachers hardwork they step back.

I do not blame them, as dance was never treated as full time profession for lot of reasons. Taking dance as a career is a challenge to lead a life without a social security, medicare, insurance in a country which looks very rosy from outside. When a person charges $25 per hour, I do not know, if they are doing justice for them selves or just doing to win over parents in a WALMART style.

Anyone, with reasonable thinking in USA will agree with me.

If anyone would like work on volunteer basis, I hope they are supported by their well-earned spouses.

I also disagree with teachers and musicians also, overcharging indiscriminately. Teachers and musicians should consider the pre-determined factors of parents such as economic conditions.

The dance art must grow in a normal atmosphere, where, dance teachers could earn a decent income, live like any others and make community better.

I agree with lots of issues such as higher musician fee, teachers fee. I regret some dance teachers are not clearly communicating with these issues ahead of time. It is absolutely necessary for both teachers and students to be clear before anything starts.

Meanwhile, I urge all the parents consider the hard work of teachers and musicians which makes things more better.

Art cannot survive without each others respect and recognitions.

I salute to many of my student's parents who are so dedicated to bring the best of Indian classical dances thorugh their children, to the place where I live. I would like to clarify, this opinion is purely based on my experience. If any parent feel betrayed, I suggest them to have a clear communication with everyone and see if its possible to get more smoother environment.

Thanks for giving me a chance to share opinion. I will close my discussion with this email.
