You belong to a great tradition and you can help propogate that in more ways than one. You can try and convince your family that you wish to dance. I know this is difficult because I was not allowed to dance either. (Maybe you will marry a tolerant and understanding husband who will encourage your passion. I did and I am learning the art now.)
Why don't you gather facts about your family, your grandfather and publish articles in magazines and websites like KutcheriBuzz.com? You can even write a book. That might convince the family that the world has changed. It is an uphill task but there is no harm in trying. You can also learn the art for the sake of pleasure. See if you can learn it for the joy of dancing and not for performance. Your family may allow you to do that.
I do not know your age but if you are in school or college, do very well in your studies to prove to your family that you care about education too. Or, just wait until you are older and more independent to do your own thing. Even the law cannot stop you then.
I actually understand your pain and frustration. I was in the same boat as a youngster. Whatever you do, please do not give up.
It is unfortunate that certain practices in our country have made people of different castes and communities abandon our rich cultural heritage. I hope India will change completely one day and people will be judged on what they do and not on where they are born. Good Luck to you.
