Namaste Concerned Parent,

You are creating an experience for the child by dancing with live orchestra for a longer length of time than a regular program. So it is like paying for an experience at college...not something that is less important... You are creating a memory for the child for her life.

Try to reduce venue cost by dancing in a temple by paying token fees or try to combine the arangetram with another girl. That is how I did my arangetram because my parents could not afford to pay all the costs. Find local talent then you don't have to pay boarding fees and food etc. Or on a trip to India, identify your own orchestra. Or if possible, do the arangetram in India...

Most importantly, we all recognize that not everyone can do an arangetram. And that is fine. It makes no difference to the dancer's opportunity for success. I know my very close friend who sings and dances beautifully did not have an arangetram. She is teaching now and there is nobody who questions her about it. The talent will shine regardless. The scholar in the dancer should give her the self confidence - not the claps of the audience. Please tell your friends not to feel bad about this.

We all write competitive exams and only few of us go to IIT. That does not mean all others are less intelligent. Please view it in the same light and do not feel bad for your child beacuse you do not have the resources at this point for her arangetram... May be she can do it later... She will be just fine without it. She must be feeling really happy dancing with or without the arangetram. So the parent should not feel guilty.

Sincerely,
Megha
