The Mylapore Trio, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation celebrated the 162nd month KALA POSHAKAM program featuring Sugathan Mohandass and his sister Swathy Mohan. NATYA SAMARPANAM was dedicated to Sugathan’s guru Late. Thangamani Teacher of Kalakshetra Foundation, on her 5th Remembrance Day. A lively Alarippu was followed by a Padavarnam, both  rendered in Guru Thangamani Teacher’s voice in a recorded medium. They concluded their performance with a Thevaram by Thirunavukkarasar in praise of Lord Marundeeshwarar of Thiruvanmiyur and a Guru Mangalam penned by Revathy Sankkaran exclusively for this program.
On this occasion 21 children who were the Special Prize Winners of the 17th Year Balar Chithirai Kalai Vizha were given Talent, Proficiency and Multi-Talent Prizes. Revathi Sakkaran and Meenakshi Dhamodharan – the maternal grandmother of Sugathan who is an octogenarian and a Mohiniattam artist - distributed the prizes and certificates to the winners. All the members and children presented themselves in gorgeous traditional attire.

To commemorate the Festival Season, “The Mylapore Trio” S. Amarnath, S. Surendranath, S. Aparna, Sugathan and members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation organized the 16th year POOJA VIDHANAM innovative workshop for women - the know-how of Ganesha Chathurthi, Krishna Jayanthi and Varalakshmi Vritam. This time it was organised exclusively for the members of ‘Kadambari’ (a group of women). The dais was traditionally & aesthetically decorated with Maayilai, Pushpam, Vaazhai maram, etc. The floor was decorated with maa kolam & kaavi which added flavour. The three deities were decorated and placed on the elevated platform. Most of the Women were in nine yards madisar of different colours to suit the auspicious occasion.
Aparna gave an introduction about the workshop. She explained how she is able to balance her profession and home, which includes performing all Poojas without compromising anything. Amarnath spoke about the activities of the Foundation and shared historical information about these Festivals. Surendranath explained the significance and shared rare information about these Poojas. Aparna & Sugathan also demonstrated few Pooja related processes. Surendranath gave a lecture demonstration on – Alankaram, beautifying Amman face, to make Pillayar umbrella, to make the traditional “Thazhampoo Jadai” with an array of colourful flowers & many more tips. Aparna demonstrated the making of “Panju Vastram” in the most conventional method. Sugathan demonstrated the process of preparing homemade kohl which is harmless and can be used by women and also applied to the Goddess. Finally Varalakshi Amman was brought on procession in a traditional manner from the verandah entrance to the Pooja area by Aparna and Foundation women. Relevant songs were sung by ladies of Kadambari and finally Deepaaraadhanai was performed for all the three gods.

Tholpaavaikoothu (Shadow Puppet) is one of the ancient theatrical performances South India. Tholpaavai is a compound terms of two words 1. Thol (leather) 2.Paavai (doll). It is believed to have been performed even before 9th century AD. But it has spread throughout South India after having its theatrical theme from the episodic events of Kamba Ramayana as its basic performing texts. Soham has been accepted as official selection at the 47th ANNUAL DANCE ON CAMERA FESTIVAL presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, New York. It was  screened on July 13 at 6pm as part of the Shorts Series. The film is also official selection at the Los Angeles Dance Shorts Film Festival in Los Angeles. SOHAM is the ‘Immortal Swan Song of the East,’ a film that amalgamates contemporary thought and is performed in Bharatanatyam style and a soundscape of Carnatic Music. The film retains the integral purity of Bharatanatyam while exploring various cinematic possibilities and visual dimensions.

IGNCA presented screening of EK THI GULAB, a film on Gulab Bai of Nautanki tradition. The film is the journey of legendary artist Gulab Bai (d. 1996), who was perhaps the first female actress to join the male-dominated Nauṭaṅkī show. Gulab will be remembered for her untiring efforts for rejuvenating the waning eclectic tradition of folk theatre, with fresh ideas, themes, innovative stylistic improvisations and linguistic nuances. She was honoured with Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, among other awards in recognition of her significant contribution.
