June 30, 2019 Aurangabad
Mahagami artists presented tribute to Mahakavi Kalidas with an innovative dance production based on Grishma-Varsha ritu sections of Kalidas’s Ritusamharam. Conceived, choreographed and directed by Parwati Dutta (Guru & Director of Mahagami Gurukul), this Kathak-Odissi-Natya presentation brought alive the rich poetic creations of Kalidas, the profound Sanskrit legacy and the ancient Natya tradition of dance, drama and abhinaya. JALADASAMAYE began with ‘Nati Samvaad’ by 2 young dancers who introduced the performance through Sanskrit dialogues. A recreation of ‘Purvarang’ from Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra brought forth the ceremonial proceedings through chanting and rhythmic patterns. An invocation to Surya (sun) set to Raag Lalit described attributes of the deity and his chariot of 7 horses. The imaginative adaptation of Surya Namaskar evoked the idea of the rising Sun.
Exploration of Grishma ritu began with the shloka ‘Prachand Surya...’ and ‘Nishah Shashank...’ which indicates how one finds relief in moonlight, sprinkled water, fragrant flowers in summer. With more intense summer, trees and creepers dry out, animals helplessly wander in search of water, and men folks are subjected to sudden loss of resources and life due to forest fires. Ranging from sublime movements in the beginning part of summer set to raag Sarang, to the next in raag Bhatiyar lending more gravity and finally the pathos in raag Darbari, the Sanskrit verses were composed by Parwati Dutta. The beginning of rainy season was composed through sounds of claps and ghungru. A vibrant rhythmic dialogue between Padhant (utterances) and Vadya portrayed vivid pictures of thundering clouds, lightning and rain drops. Abhisarika nayika, vipralabdha and Svadhinpatika nayika find suggestive description in later passages.

The event presented the her-story of the Sadir dancer; her repertoire and her reputation as an articulate, charming and sophisticated performer. Swarnamalya shared the experiences of seeking out hereditary dancers; piecing together closely guarded anecdotes and repertoire pieces. Nearly eighty-five years after Sadir disappearing into Bharatanatyam, we begin to embrace both, joining the discourse of multiple histories. The discussion and demonstration both traced and moved beyond the narratives of erasure and caste politics behind present-day Bharatanatyam. The evening included a 10 minute Q&A.
