Lavanya Raghuraman, one of the Bharata Kalanjali alumni, bagged the BALASARASWATHI ENDOWMENT PRIZE from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha for 2017.



Three Indian participants - Vikram Iyenger, Ruchira Das and Menaka Rodriguez - have been selected by the Australia Council for the Arts for its prestigious International Leadership Program. As a part of the program, these renowned art professionals will complete a six-month long program in Australia, including two intensive residencies.

Padmaja Suresh received the SRI SUBBRAMIAH AWARD (a great musician) from the Sri Subbramiah Trust on Nov 26, 2017 with citation and cash award for contribution to the arts at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore.




Dr.Suparna Venkatesh received the KARNATAKA KALASHREE award from Karnataka Sangeetha Nrithya  Academy on November 26, 2017 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bangalore.



Shankarananda Kalakshetra's senior student Krupa Ravi received the YUVA RASIKA SITARA title and award from RR sabha, Ghatkopar, Mumbai, on November 12, 2017. Her guru Ananda Shankar Jayant was awarded the title of NATYA RATNA




Hemabharathy Palani, senior dancer and Rehearsal Director of Attakkalari Dance Company collaborated with British filmmakers Rachel Davies and Daniel Saul through Big Dance Shorts on their project titled 'Ek Choti Si Asha - A Big Small Dream'. The project was a poetic response to India's audacious 2018 lunar mission. Big Dance Shots are commissioned for Channel 4's Random Acts strand as part of UK/India 2017 season, which is led by the British Council and the Indian High Commission.
Artist member of the Attakkalari Dance Company, Anindita Ghosh, is invited by the Asia Cultural Institute, South Korea to work on their latest production billed as the Asia Dance Company Project. The production involves 10 emerging dancer-choreographers from across Asia and Anindita is the only representative from India.



Jiva Performing Arts (NY based Sonali Skandan) is one of the inaugural grantees of the Dance Advancement Fund of Dance/NYC, made possible by the Ford Foundation. The purpose of the Fund is to address the inequitable distribution of resources in the dance field by supporting dance makers and companies with budgets of less than $1 million.




Sri Raja Rajeshwari Bharatanatya Kala Mandir and Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha celebrated the birth centenary of Guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai (1917 - 2017). A special cover was released by Dr. HC Agrawal (Chief Post Master General, Maharashtra Circle) on Nov 1, 2017 at Mumbai.

Milapfest Selection Committee chose Narthaki.com and Dr. Anita Ratnam as its Founder Director, for the first International Arts Award VISHWA KALA RATNA established by the Trust for the year 2017. The award celebrates and acknowledges the sterling contribution made by dynamic, well established individuals /organizations towards promoting and strengthening Indian Arts globally. Milapfest conferred the award in London's Bhavan Centre on October 25, 2017.
In her acceptance speech, Dr.Anita Ratnam said:“Delighted and honoured to be the first awardee of the GLOBAL INDIAN ARTS AWARD conferred by #MILAPFEST at #TheBhavan in London. Justin McCarthy received Natyanjali's NARTAKA AWARD for 2017 on 28 October 2017 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore, Chennai.




MITHAS founder George Ruckert and New England's Kathak dance pioneer Gretchen Hayden Ruckert were honored with the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD at the New England Choice Awards gala to be held at Westin Hotel in Waltham, MA, on October 27, 2017 by INE Multimedia, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting and supporting charitable organizations, art, culture, education and empowerment. George Ruckert, a performer, composer, arranger, author and a teacher of music at MIT, is the founder of MIT's Heritage of the Arts of South Asia, known as MITHAS. His wife Gretchen Ruckert is a performer and teacher of Kathak dance, and is the senior-most disciple of late Pandit Chitresh Das.




Gurus Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran were conferred the NRITYA RATNA AWARD by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Coimbatore, for their contributions to the field of Bharatanatyam, on October 20, 2017 at the Bhavan premises, Coimbatore.




Dr. S.P.Balasubramaniam, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Dr. Nalli Kuppuswamy received the KALA PRADARSHINI GHANTASALA PURASKAR on October 15, 2017 at Chennai.




For their contributions in their respective fields, three eminent Delhi dancers Bharati Shivaji, Deepti Omcherry and Geeta Chandran, were honoured by the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, P.J. Kurien and Kerala Minister Ramachandran Kadannappalli (Ports/Museums/Archaeology/Archives) with the KERALA DELHI CULTURE HERITAGE AWARD at a gala ceremony arranged at Delhi's Central Park in Connaught Place, on October 15, 2017



KARNATAKA NRITYAKALA PARISHATH AWARDS were given to Bala Vishwanath (Tumkur) and Sudhir Rao (Udupi) on Oct 13, Rupashree Madhusudan (Bangalore) and Poornima Bhagawat (Davanagere) on Oct 14, Sahana Bhat (Hubli) and Balakrishna Manjeshwar (Mangalore) on Oct 15, 2017 during the Ankura Festival at Shukra Auditorium, Bangalore.

The 10th KV SATHYANARAYANA EXCELLENCE AWARD was given to Kuchipudi dancer/guru Veena Murthy Vijay on Sept 26, 2017 at Eluru. The awardee received citation, silver crown, shawl and Rs.10,000.




Nitya Akhanda Nrittam, 27 hour of continuous Bharatanatyam performance, was held on 23rd and 24th September 2017 at Ganesa Natyalaya, New Delhi, for the celebration of Bharatanatyam Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan's 80th birthday. On September 24, 2017, Ganesa Natayalaya was awarded the Record Breaking certificate by the Asia Book of  Records and the India Book of Records for the LONGEST BHARATANATAYAM DANCE MARATHON RELAY (27hrs 30 mins).




On 11 September 2017 at the ICCR Auditorium in New Delhi at an event organized by AKS, an initiative led by Odissi dancer/actress Dr. Chandana Raul, Delhi's top dancers Madhavi Mudgal, Shovana Narayan, Geeta Mahalik, Ranjana Gauhar, Sharon Lowen, Prathibha Prahlad, Geeta Chandran and Nalini-Kamalini were honoured with the KABI SAMRAT UPENDRA BHANJA SAMMAN.  Santoor maestro Bhajan Sopori also received the award.




The 'NALCO Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Award 2017' carrying a purse of Rs.1 lakh each and citation, was presented to two eminent personalities Guru Dhruba Charan Biswal in the field of dance and Shyamamani Devi in the field of music. The 'NALCO Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Yuva Pratibha Samman 2017' with a cash prize of Rs.25,000 each was presented to Lingaraj Pradhan (Bhubaneswar) and Namrata Mehta (Mumbai) for Odissi dance, Jyotsna Jagannathan (Bangalore) for Bharatanatyam and Jateen Kumar Sahoo (Mumbai) for Odissi music. The award ceremony took place on September 9, 2017 at Rabindra Mandap, Bhubaneswar.




The Government of West Bengal conferred on Kathak dancer and teacher Prof. Amita Dutt the SHIKSHA RATNA AWARD for 2017 for her outstanding contribution to higher education, on the occasion of Teacher's Day, on September 5, 2017 at Nazrul Mancha, Kolkata. The Award was given by Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal.



At the America Kuchipudi Dance Convention, gurus Rathna Kumar, Mrinalini Sadananda and Sumathi Kaushal were awarded as Pioneers of Kuchipudi in America on September 2, 2017 at Dr. Hamireddy Lakireddy Bhavan, Milpitas, CA

Nan Melville won the Best Documentary Short Film award for her film 'Nrityagram: For the Love of Dance' at the Five Continents International Film Festival in Venezuela, in August 2017.




Dr. Sunil Kothari received the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD from Ranjana Gauhar's Utsav Odissi Dance Academy on August 17, 2017 at New Delhi.




On August 15, 2017 on the inaugural evening of Thyaga Bharatham festival by Natyarangam, honor for Bharatanatyam guru Radha Sridhar, SUDHARANI RAGHUPATHY ENDOWMENT AWARD to JB Sruthi Sagar (flute accompaniment for Bharatanatyam), OBUL REDDY ENDOWMENT AWARD for Bharatanatyam dancer Sathyanarayana Raju, VASANTHALAKSHMI - NARASIMHACHARI ENDOWMENT AWARD for Apoorva Jayaram (emerging talent), OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO BHARATANATYAM to scholar and resource person Dr. Sudha Seshayyan, were given at Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai.

Nirbhaya Samaroh is an annual event hosted by the Honour for Women National Campaign to raise awareness on women's rights. The event is named after the 2012 Delhi gang rape victim and is presented as a tribute to all victims of Violence against Women. Founded by women's rights activist Manasi Pradhan, the NIRBHAYA PURUSKAR felicitates women achievers in different fields; the first round of honours were announced in 2013. In the 2017 honour list, dancer Geeta Chandran was conferred the Nirbhaya Puruskar along with social-activist Kamla Bhasin, actor-activist Shabana Azmi, banker Chanda Kochhar, education-activist Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath; and sportswoman Deepa Malik, on July 25, 2017 at IIC, Delhi.



On 15 July 2017, fourteen soloists and four groups, a total of 45 performers, took to the stage at Birmingham Hippodrome to battle it in Akademi's National South Asian Youth Dance Competition. The winners of NAVADAL 2017:

KALASAGAR AWARD 2017 in the field of traditional performing art form was presented  on the 93rd birth anniversary of its founder Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Poduval, on 28 May 2017 at Regional Theatre, Trissur. At the 5th gala de la diversité on May 25, 2017 at Montreal, Roger Sinha had the honor of receiving the trophy LYS FOR ARTS AND CULTURE for his work MoW! / Shown (olly) wood!  The Jury Grand Prize Mosaic recognized the contribution of Sinha Danse, which promotes inclusion and influence of diversity in all its forms. The gala is presented by National Bank in collaboration with Médiamosaïque, only news agency of diversity in Canada.




Raghunath Manet and Didier Bellocq's documentary film 'Dance of Shiva' is selected as BEST SPIRITUAL DOCUMENTARY by AFI World Peace Initiative, supported by the United Nations. They received the award at the 'World Peace & Tolerance' reception on May 23, 2017 at the Majestic Hotel, during the Festival de Cannes.



AMG (Asian Media & Marketing Group) hosted the very first Eastern Eye Arts, Culture and Theatre Awards (ACTA) last year on May 22, 2016 in the Royal Festival Hall at the Southbank Centre in London, and as part of its Alchemy Festival, the largest multi-arts festival of its kind focusing on South Asia. . On May 19, 2017 Akademi received the MOST ENTERPRISING CHARITY OF THE YEAR award at the Asian Voice Charity Awards in London. Along with this, Akademi's director Mira Kaushik has been named as one of the top 100 most influential people in UK-India Relations by India Incorporated in conjunction with UK-India Awards. 




On the 43rd annual day of Ganesha Natyalalaya, its founder president Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan honoured Nalli Kuppuswamy, Guru Kalyanasundaram Pillai and Dr. Sunil Kothari for their services to dance with SHRESHTH KALA PRACHARAK AWARD on May 11, 2017 in New Delhi.




Bharatanatyam dancer Meera Sreenarayanan was conferred with NRITHYASREE AWARD by Dr. Divya Nedungadi's Deeksha, Palakkad during their Dance and Music festival held on May 6, 2017 at Chembai Music College, Palakkad. Prashant Shastry's Naatyakalakshetra celebrates the 10th year of Nrithya Utsava festivals through the year with NRITHYA PRABHA awards given to senior gurus during the year. It was given to Guru Padmini Ravi in Jan, Kuchipudi Guru Madhava Peddi Murthy in Feb, and musician Shyamala Jagidar in March. Kathak guru Vijayashree Choudhary received it on April 21, 2017 at Mumbai.




Bharatanatyam dancer Urmila Sathyanarayanan received the OBUL REDDY GNANAMBAL AWARD for Lifetime Achievement from the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mylapore, Chennai on April 16, 2017.

Kutiyattam performer Kapila Venu has been chosen for this year's NATIONAL KUMAR GANDHARV AWARD of the cultural department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The award comprising a cash award of Rs. 1,25,000, a citation and a sculpture was awarded on the 8th of April 2017 at the Malhar Smriti Mandir in village of Devas in Madhya Pradesh which was Pandit Kumar Gandharv's home for several years. This is the first time the award which was initially reserved for musicians is being given to a performing artiste of a different genre.

Indo-British Intellectuals Forum and World Book of Records presented Mumbai based Bollywood choreographer Sandip Soparrkar with the INDO-BRITISH BALLROOM DANCE JEWEL AWARD 2017 for being the first Indian to promote Ballroom Dancing worldwide and his contributions in the field of dance and choreography. The certificate was given to Sandip on March 6, 2017 at the House of Commons in London.

The Rotary Club of Madras Central honoured the Dhananjayans with Rotary award of FOR THE SAKE OF HONOR towards their immense contribution in the field of performing arts on February 27, 2017 at Chennai.



On February 19, 2017 the GURU KJ SARASA AWARD was conferred by Sarasalaya on dance violinist MV Sreenivas, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai.
