M-DO in collaboration with inDANCE presents an explosive double bill featuring two of Canada's exceptional male dancers - Hiroshi Miyamoto and Chad Walasek. The evening represents the "Canadian school" of South Asian dance, with two non- South Asian dancers who have trained in Bharatanatyam and Kathak in Toronto. They will come together for the first time in an unforgettable evening of high-energy dance, inspiring live music, and breathtaking choreography! Red is a fifty-minute solo Bharatanatyam work for dancer Hiroshi Miyamoto and five musicians. With choreography and music direction by inDANCE's artistic director Hari Krishnan, Red focuses on the erotic and valiant dimensions of the traditional "heroes" in courtesan poems, the male gods Shiva and Krishna. Red presents some of these compositions for the first time ever, based on years of scholarly research and dance training under marginalized masters from the courtesan community in South India. The title Red invokes the red soil of the earth characteristic of rural South India, the red dye worn on the hands of dancers, and the red energies of fertility and auspiciousness that are said to arise from the dance. Kathak Solo is a fifty-minute work for dancer Chad Walasek. Choreographed by M -DO's artistic director Joanna de Souza, this solo will be accompanied by live music featuring Ritesh Das (on table) and de Souza (lehere and recitation). Kathak Solo is an exploration of dynamism, rhythm and spontaneity. The choreography is set in Ektaal, a rhythmic cycle of 12 beats will highlight traditional and contemporary interpretations of classical compositions. Featured in the program are new works including a Tarana set to raag Basant-Bahar and the story Madan-Bhasma: The Death of the God of Love. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Ontario's oldest Gothic church - The Church of St. Stephen's in the Field, Miyamoto and Walasek bring the classical forms of Bharatanatyam and Kathak dance into the 21st century with their contemporary sensibilities and aesthetics.
