The
9th 'Cracovia Danza' Court Dance Festival
Court Dance in Countries of the Orient August 2 - 10, 2008 Krakow, Poland July 25, 2008 Under the honorary patronage of: Bogdan Zdrojewski, Minister of Culture and National Heritage Jacek Majchrowski, Mayor of the City of Krakow Performances, concerts, presentations by children’s and youth dance ensembles, parades of performers, a grand ball for the public, dance workshops, lectures and an art exhibition devoted to Indian motifs found in European ballets – all these events will take place in Krakow from Saturday, August 2 to Sunday, August 10 at the following venues: Villa Decius, the Wawel Hill, the Main Market Square and the Barbican. This is when the 9th edition of the 'Cracovia Danza' Court Dance Festival will be held. In connection with the celebrations of the 'Indian Year in Poland,' 'Court dance in countries of the Orient – India' will constitute the leitmotif weaving throughout the 2008 Festival. By presenting performances of the "Kathak" court dance, amongst others, the Organizers wish to take the audience on a journey to the exotic and colorful world of Indian Maharajas. The rich and enticing culture of India has for centuries fascinated European artists. Hence, the theme for this year's Festival creates a great opportunity to present Indian elements present in European court dances, too. The Festival program abounds with many highlights. As in previous years, Villa Decius will host court dance workshops between August 2 – 8. These will be run by distinguished experts from all over the world, including the renowned Indian dancer of the Manipuri classical form of dance, Sanjib Bhattacharya. Indian music concerts will be performed by Maria Pomianowska with the Ensemble as well as a series of lectures on the subject of Indian culture will be delivered at Villa Decius, too. The exhibition mounted within the framework of the Festival, 'Indian Motifs in European Ballets,' will showcase authentic Indian costumes and masks as well as designs for European ballet costumes incorporating Indian elements. Admission is free of charge to all dance presentations, lectures, the exhibition and concerts held at Villa Decius. The Festival's
readiness to extend its sphere of interest to the faraway countries of
the Orient alerts us to the existence of the still alive tradition of court
dance maintained beyond Europe to this day. The festival presents the jointly
produced premiere performance of 'POLAND – INDIA: CONVERSATIONS' where
the Artists (Sanjib Bhattacharya, Maria Pomianowska with the Ensemble,
the 'Cracovia Danza' Court Dance Ballet), despite the formal differences,
will engage in an artistic dialogue built on gestures and emotions (August
8th at 8pm in the Arcaded Courtyard of the Wawel Castle). Other evening
performances which will be staged at the Wawel Hill are also worth recommending:
on August 9th at 9pm – 'JALSAA' (Vaswati Misra with the "Dhwani" Kathak
Dance Ensemble) and on August 10th at 8pm – 'CHESS' according to Jan Kochanowski's
poem ("Cracovia Danza" Court Ballet).
