Sunandas Performing Arts Center, Houston, presents the legendary dance exponent guru Prof. C V Chandrasekhar, specialized in Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of guru Rukmini Devi Arundale the founder and director of Kalakshetra.

NIRANTARA is a unique presentation with coming together of authentic choreographies of Rukmini Devi Arundale and also a few of Chandrasekhar’s own choreography. Presentation of Nirantara has a blend of the abstract and the emotional fusion of two major elements, nritta (pure dance) and nritya (expressive dance) and is a dramatic interpretation of the juxtaposition and contrast of Bharatanatyam rudiments.

Prof. C V Chandrasekhar is very well known for his focus on the Angika, and his execution of lines which are prominently stressed and his precise way of presentation with tremendous energy, he is an inspiration for the young upcoming generation of dancers. The presentation of Nirantara has both South and North Indian music scores.

PRAYOG - this piece will explore the relationship between mathematical and metaphysical elements of traditional South Indian dance through Bharatanatyam choreography. The choreography couples vigorous rhythmic footwork with emotive hand and facial expressions. The choreography translates the language of rhythm to its audience through an array of visual movements. The main objective of this piece is to show the usage of footwork along with the basic nuances of Bharatanatyam such as, hand gestures, standing postures, leaps and circling movements interplayed into geometric nodes and beats to create various geometric figures and shapes. The geometric shapes are often cosmological: they represent in symbol the essential structure of the universe. For example, four directions, the planets, various divinities and man himself. This piece also uses basic principles of arithmetic to explore the bridge between arts and mathematics. The music score for PRAYOG is by Praveen D Rao.

NIRANTARA is a solo dance work by C V Chandrasekhar for duration of an hour and PRAYOG will be performed by a highly talented and flamboyant eight member ensemble headed by Viji Rao and this piece is one hour ten minutes long.
