November 15, 2007

Prof. CV Chandrashekar tours both the U.S and Canada with his solo production NIRANTARA, a journey of music and dance. It is a double bill with Three Aksha’s new production PRAYOG, a dialogue between dance and mathematics from the 13th of July till the 15th of September 2008.

A legendary dance exponent, guru CV Chandrasekhar is specialized in Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam under the able guidance of Rukmini Devi Arundale, the founder and director of Kalakshetra. Nirantara is a unique presentation with coming together of authentic choreographies of Rukmini Devi and also few of Prof. Chandrasekhar’s own choreography. Presentation of Nirantara has a blend of the abstract & the emotional fusion of two major elements, nritta (pure dance) and nritya (expressive dance) and is a dramatic interpretation of the juxtaposition and contrast of Bharatanatyam rudiments.

Prayog will explore the relationship between mathematical and metaphysical elements of traditional South Indian dance through Bharatanatyam choreography that couples vigorous rhythmic footwork with emotive hand and facial expressions. The choreography translates the language of rhythm to its audience through an array of visual movements. The main objective of this piece is to show the usage of footwork along with the basic nuances of Bharatanatyam such as hand gestures, standing postures, leaps and circling movements interplayed into geometric nodes and beats to create various geometric figures and shapes.
