Dance Festival - Marga Darshana
In instituting 'Marga Darshana' Srjan's primary focus is to revive the all important role of the solo dancer in the classical idiom; it is the solo performance in Odissi which unveils the very soul of Odissi, and brings to life the individual brilliance that the dancer lives for, and strives for, constantly. The Marga Darshana festival is also an attempt to go beyond the usual annual dance and music festival. The effort is to instill a continuing sense of purpose in the young male dancer, a determination to overcome all odds, to push oneself to the very peak of perfection, time after time, year after year. In the world of dance performance the avenues for male dancer are sadly very limited. During three decades of travel and performance with Guruji, I have frequently observed the plight of talented male dancers who are frequently sidelined-the preference invariably going in favour of the female performer. The need of the hour is to create a viable platform to showcase the talent and capacity of good male dancers. Audiences need to be coaxed to appreciate the unique expressiveness of the male dancer and the nuances that only he can provide. History demonstrates that it is the male Guru who has carried the tradition down the ages: hence it is urgently required that the male dancer be accorded the rightful status and opportunity that he deserves. Guruji was a universally acclaimed male dancer and as his son I have tried, all my life, to give expression to the creative wellsprings of a classical dancer. It therefore gives me great joy to renew our humble efforts, at Srjan, to help in creating a viable performance space for the male dancer and acknowledge with respect his status in our society. In this we need the good wishes and active support of not only the dance fraternity but also audiences and culture-conscious citizens, every where. The need to perform to the best of his abilities is the dream of every young and struggling male dancer; the challenge is to provide a platform that would give him the freedom and encouragement to realise this dream.
