Ayswaria Wariar presents Urmila January 21 - 31, 2012 Bangalore, Maharashtra December 26, 2011 If there is one character in Ramayana that has not been given her due
importance, that character is of Urmila, Laxmana’s wife. One version
says that Urmila’s character was so great, her sacrifice so supreme that
no amount of description or praise can justify it. When Sita went into
exile along with Rama and faced innumerable hardships, at least she was
in the company of her husband, Lord Rama, and had unending help from her
brother-in-law, Laxmana.. Urmila, on her part wanted to accompany her
husband, but remained back in Ayodhya. Urmila suffered in silence
for fourteen long years, never complained about her loneliness or
anything else for that matter. This padam, written by Kavalam Narayana Pannicker, and choreographed by Mohiniattam dancer Ayswaria Wariar depicts this saga of Urmila. She says with pride, “I Urmila, am the daughter of King Janaka of Mithila.” Yet it was Sita who was hailed as the daughter of Mithila. She reminisces and pines in her loneliness. It was ironic that while Laxmana suffered the exile in the jungles, Urmila was wracked by the throes of her own exile from Laxmana, in the riches of the palace. Finally the padam concludes in Urmila’s realization. Urmila now sees the larger picture where Sita accompanied Lord Rama as she had a role to play in this saga. Urmila by being the better half of Laxmana too has an intrinsic path chalked out for her in life.
