MS University of Baroda presents
Nritya Parva 2014
February 9 - 11, 2014 Baroda

Feb 8, 2014

India's oldest and the first university in India to offer dance at graduate (and later post graduate and PhD levels) was started in 1950. Mohan Khokar was its first Head and he set the tone and course of dance studies, a course still in use. Veterans like E.Krishna Iyer, Dr R. Raghavan would be invited as Guest Speakers those days. The department taught Kathak by the Gangani family and Bharatanatyam by M.K.Saroja and Kubernath Tanjorkar, amongst others. Later Dr Anjali Mehr, Prof.C.V.Chandrasekhar and  mridangist Natarajan headed the Dance Dept.  Today, almost 75 years later, Dr Parul Shah heads the dept and is the Dean. She continues the work and invites many to perform and speak at the same old heritage building by the oldest and biggest lake of Baroda, Sur Sagar.

Every year in memory of her teacher Dr Anjali Mehr, she does a seminar cum festival in Feb. This year, star dancers Geeta Chandran, Anita Ratnam, Anuj Mishra, Shashadhar Acharya, will showcase various styles they are known for, along with Baroda artists. SNA Vice Chair and veteran critic Shanta Serbjeet Singh will give the Keynote Address while Dr. Lina Bernstien from USA will be a Guest Speaker on Magda Nachman, a forgotten painter, who made sketches and paintings of famous dancers of yore like Shanta Rao. Scholar-critic and editor of India's only yearbook on dance - attendance -  Ashish Mohan Khokar, has curated the festival and mentors the 3 day gathering of best minds and talents in dance.
