Shambhavi School of Dance organizes NAYIKA- excellence personified, a feature celebrating International Women's Day which knits a morning session of seminar and an evening of performances. Conceptualized and designed by Vyjayanthi Kashi, Artistic Director Shambhavi School of Dance, this is an opportunity for dancers and all Bangaloreans to appreciate and support the women fraternity as a whole who have played a key role in the evolution of Kuchipudi to what it is today.

The morning seminar will address the topic of ‘The contribution of Women to Kuchipudi.’ Kuchipudi, one of the popular dance forms of India is different from the other forms. It was originally a dance drama technique called as Kuchipudi Bhagavatam/Yakshagana presented only by men. As mentioned in the literatures, Siddhendra Yogi, the chief architect of Kuchipudi trained a group of young Brahmin boys in this art form to tell stories from the Bhagavatam. Even the feminine roles were donned by men. With the passing of time, Kuchipudi also branched out as a solo form welcoming women into it. It was Guru Vedantam Lakshiminarayana Shastry who was instrumental in initiating this transformation. Ever since, there has been a remarkable contribution made by women. This seminar will document the path taken by women achievers as gurus, performers, researchers or critics in preserving, promoting and popularizing this art form. The evening performances will witness a blend of different styles as dancers come together in a duet presentation.

Yamini Krishnamurthy will be honored with the NATYASHASTRA AWARD for her immense contribution to Kuchipudi.

At: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Race Course Road
