Venue: Music Academy, Chennai
Time: 6.30pm
All are welcome

Pandanallur is a small village in Tanjore district of Tamilnadu. This serene village reverberated with music and dance and practiced one of the oldest traditions of Bharatanatyam which was hailed as the Pandanallur style. The worldwide acclaimed gurus of this style were Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai, Chockalingam Pillai and Subbaraya Pillai. They were the direct descendants of the famous four brothers Ponniah, Chinniah, Vadivelu and Sivanandam collectively referred to as ‘Tanjore Quartet’ who were the architects of the modern  repertoire of Bharatanatyam and laid down the ‘Margam’ format of presentation. The brothers were musicians par excellence trained under Dikshitar, the great Carnatic musician. They composed numerous compositions specially suited for dance.

Their descendants were the Pandanallur gurus who excelled in choreographing the Tanjore Quartet compositions. They established a style which is greatly admired for its clean lines, intricate sharp rhythm, grace and a minimalistic approach to convey maximum rasa. Their famous students were Pandanallur Jayalakshmi, Thiruvallaputtur sisters, Rukmini Arundale, Mrinalini Sarabhai, Ram Gopal and Indrani Rehman to name a few.

The dance presentation titled ‘SAMARPAN’ will focus on showcasing a production of rare compositions hitherto not seen often on the performance platform. The garland of items presented will be rare gems that have been handed down by the past generation of dance masters and performers which will bring out the beauty of this authentic and pure style of Bharatanatyam
evolved by them.

Meenakshi Chitharanjan had the good fortune of training under the Pandanallur Gurus for over 3 decades. The production will feature her as one of the senior most torch bearer of this tradition along with her senior students. The above event happily coincides with the centenary year of one of the doyens of this unique Sampradaya, Guru Pandanallur Subbaraya Pillai. Through this production the core idea of preservation, propagation and archival of this rich parampara of the Pandanallur repertoire will be effectively achieved for future generations to come.
