World Dance Day is celebrated all over the globe on 29th April. To commemorate this occasion, Sadhya, a unit of performing arts in association with Dance with Madhuri, is planning to stage a grand show titled “NO BOUNDARIES” at Tata Theatre, NCPA, Mumbai on 27th April, at 8pm. The event brings together around 100+ artistes in a unique manner. The spectrum that would be created with this would be a seamless visual treat of dance styles taking the audience on an enthralling journey.

World Dance Day celebration was initiated by Santosh Nair in 2011, celebrating it ever since in Delhi with an overwhelming response. In 2016, the vision is to take the concept out of Delhi, to Mumbai, to a city where talent and excellence has always been acknowledged and sharing this wonderful and extremely receptive show with the audiences of Mumbai. The dance companies that shall be performing are Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company, The Danceworx (Ashley Lobo), Navdhara India Dance Theatre, Smitalay (Jhelum Paranjpe), Vaibhav Arekar’s Sankhya Dance Company, Sadhya, MJ5, Anuj Arjun Mishra Dance Company and a few more.

Director’s message
It started with an association with India Habitat Centre in 2011 where I with the support of some very encouraging seniors and upcoming artistes was able to bring to the audiences of Delhi ten different dance companies together in a seamless performance on the occasion of The World Dance Day with around 65 artistes. In 2012 we were able to get the support of National School of Drama & The Indian Council of Cultural Relations and the occasion was celebrated at Abhimanch, NSD with around eighty artistes. 2013 saw a very interesting venue-the Plaza Steps at the India Habitat Centre where 100 artistes from different genres of dance performed, which turned out to be a great success and earned enormous appreciation.

In 2014, it went a step further where the occasion got celebrated at two different venues….on two different dates…At Meghdoot Theatre 3, Sangeet Natak Akademi on the 27th April and at Plaza Steps, India Habitat Centre on 29th April with 120 artistes. 2015 saw 130 artistes presenting an eclectic mix of traditional, classical and contemporary dance styles, where the experimental piece strung together simultaneous performances by various dance companies and international artistes. A full house ticketed show at Kamani Auditorium, with a few hundred still waiting outside reflected both the popularity and the excellence of the showcase.

In 2016 now the vision is to take the concept out of Delhi, to Mumbai, to a city where talent and excellence has always been acknowledged. Our World Dance Day celebration over the years has become a platform of possibilities. Possibilities of watching, learning, appreciating and creating a support system where artistes stand shoulder to shoulder, not face to face. It is my firm belief that one’s art is much bigger than one’s style….and that is what needs to be celebrated.

There is tremendous strength in solidarity and so much more can be achieved when the energies combine. It is my dream to see that when dance festivals are organized at various levels they are not segregated into styles. I hope to see a dance festival where all can share the stage….be it Classical, Folk or Contemporary.
