Theme and Concept
The inspiration and theme for both evenings is ANEKANTA, culled from the Jaina Philosophy; its mool-mantra is that there are multiple realities to every issue – cultural, political, social, economic and, in fact, every aspect of life and living! ANEKANTA celebrates acceptance of multiple truths, embracing diversity and of universal acceptance. This unique theme is portrayed through Bharatanatyam dance performances.
The performance has been guided by the intellectual inputs from scholar-author Sudhamahi Regunathan, who is a renowned Jaina scholar.
Natya Vriksha was founded in April 1991, when Guru Geeta Chandran started teaching dance to students under her own uniquely designed institutional framework and pedagogies, inspired by her Guru K.N. Dakshinamurthi.
In her solo performance, Geeta Chandran will examine shades of ANEKANTA through choreographies that explore the relationship of WORD and MEANING; of MANY AVATARAS; of MANY BHAVAS to a SINGLE TEXT; of Ravana who gets mesmerized by every SINGLE aspect of Sita’s body and wonders if such is the power of each part, what would be the impact of the WHOLE? And of Saint Tyagaraja who presents the cosmic view of inter-relatedness of existence.
In the group choreographies, Geeta Chandran views ANEKANTA through dramatic dance strategies like an Alarippu presented in three speeds; of exploring Grihabheda in movement; finding linkages between SOUNDS and SILENCE; of the many roopas of DEVI, and of a little known viswaroopa of Vishnu that Arjuna encounters in the forests of Orissa and realises that the NAVAGUNJARA’s parts add up to the WHOLE!
In her performance, Geeta Chandran will be joined by her disciples Sneha Chakradhar, Divya Saluja, Sharanya Chandran, Anjana Seshadri, Rashi Bijlani, Pranita Choudhry, Amritasruthi Radhakrishnan, Radhika Kathal, Madhura Bhrushundi, Aakanksha Kumar, Shreya Dua and Kaveri Mehta. They will be joined by dancers from the Natya Vriksha Dance Company (NEXT).
Music for ANEKANTA is designed by Geeta Chandran in close collaboration with K. Venkateshwaran and Dr. S. Vasudevan. This lyrical music-scape is further enhanced with rhythmic inputs by K. Sivakumar and Lalgudi Sri Ganesh adding verve and vibrancy to the production.
ANEKANTA is supported by a stellar crew of artisans: Sandhya Raman has designed costumes, Manish Kansara has conceptualised the stage design; Sharad Kulshreshtha is the lights designer.
ANEKANTA aspires to bring valuable oxygen to the larger public discourse on identity. It is a powerful artistic statement of dancer Geeta Chandran who has moved tradition forward with her strategic performances.
ANEKANTA is yet another path-breaking event by this talented artist and Natya Vriksha Dance Company.
