Umayalpuram is a serene village, located on the banks of Cauvery, in the bus route from Kumbakonam to Thiruvaiyaru. This village can boast of a few ancient temples for Lord Vishnu and Lord Siva in addition to abodes of Lord Ganapathi and Ayyanar.

The village also takes pride as the birthplace of scholars Brahmasri Swamy Bhagavathar, Sundara Bhagavathar and Krishna Bhagavathar, well known direct disciples of Saint Thyagaraja. The brothers had installed the vigrahas of Lord Rama along with Sita, Lakshmana and Anjaneya in the Rama Mandiram (popularly called as Bajanai Matam) situated in the East Street of this village. Daily pujas and the Annual Sita Kalyanam are being conducted for over a 100 years. This Sri Rama Mandiram also perpetuates the memory of the three Umayalpuram scholars through Annual Music and Dance concerts. The festivity also pays tribute to other great teachers of Carnatic music from Umayalpuram. This year Sangam Festival Princeton, New Jersey, takes pride in honoring the people behind these festivities with the Annual Sangam Festival Award of Excellence.
