Krishna Gana Sabha presents
Nirikshana
39th Natya Kala Conference
Dec 26-30, 2019 Chennai

October 29, 2019

The 39th edition of the Natya Kala Conference (NKC) presented by Krishna Gana Sabha, and titled Nirikshana (Bharatanatyam: Under the Magnifying Glass), is being convened by acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and teacher, Rama Vaidyanathan.

Nirikshana seeks to examine, probe and assess Bharatanatyam as it is today. What transitions has it gone through over the years, and what can we do better in the already existing magnificent process of continuity. How can we collectively reach higher levels of excellence by celebrating tradition and embracing progression. Through dialogues, discussions and presentations, the conference aims to address some pressing issues in the world of Bharatanatyam today. Through lec-dems, the conference proposes to place several creative endeavours under the magnifying glass to get a closer in-depth perspective. Through full-length performances the conference attempts to showcase the best in tradition and its continuation, so the Nirikshana of Bharatanatyam comes full circle.

Rama Vaidyanathan, NKC's convenor this year, is one of the foremost Bharatanatyam dancers of her generation. She trained intensively under the legendary dancer, Yamini Krishnamurthy and the celebrated Guru Saroja Vaidyanathan. In a performance career spanning more than 30 years, Rama has developed her own individual style without forsaking the core principles of her dance form. Having performed at every major dance venue of the world, she has been bestowed with several titles that include the Kalaimamani by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Kalashree by the Government of Kerala, Kumar Gandharv Puraskar from the Madhya Pradesh Government as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, just to name a few. The Creative Collaborator of the conference is Aalaap, an arts management company based in Chennai.

Natya Kala Conference will be held at Krishna Gana Sabha between December 26 and December 30, 2019, from 8am to 3pm.
