A fulfilling journey

March 9, 2019

On 1st March 2019, the Corporation school at Tiruvallur Salai, Teynampet, Chennai, celebrated its Annual Day. It was a pleasure to watch the few programs showcased by the students among which Bharatanatyam dance stood out. The students had put in hours of practice sessions to bring out a beautiful production. This was possible because of the efforts of a dedicated dance teacher and supportive teaching staff in the school.

Parvathi Ravi Ghantasala, artistic director and managing trustee of Kala Pradarshini, a teacher for over 20 years, has provided opportunities to many underprivileged children to learn Bharatanatyam under her wings. Currently, she trains students at the Teynampet corporation school too, patiently conducting training sessions to mould these young girls to shed their stage fright and perform confidently. One can see the joy and enthusiasm they exude before every dance class.

In an effort to create opportunities for these budding dancers, Parvathi during the celebrations of her 40 years in dance, got them to perform on stage. Having taken the first step to empower them, she then went on to train them for the Corporation school anniversary in which over 30 children performed Bharatanatyam while others joined in other activities.

For Parvathi, working with these children amounts to a spiritual experience, considering it a reward for her 40 odd years as a performer. She hopes that the training she gives them will culminate into a career at some point in their lives and help them to rise above their limitations to live with dignity.
