 Dear Umesh,

I look back to find out how I really got introduced to nattuvangam, and it was purely out of interest, that I started playing with the cymbals when I was just 13 or 14. You just start saying the Jathis or recite alarippus in various nadais, or even the basic adavus in three speeds. The key is understanding the Thaala structure. As a dancer, you don't pay so much attention to it, but as a nattuvanar you have to demonstarte complete control over the rhythm. I used to help my teacher with the dance classes which helped me tremendously. I am sure your guru can definitely teach you how to wield the cymbals. I am now teaching my daughter nattuvangam who is just 10, and you'll be surprised how quickly they grasp the concept. Satrt practicing simple structures like Thisram, Chatusram, Kandam, Misram and Sankeernam in three speeds and to a specific Thaala, to start understanding the Thaala concept. I still do that to improve my speed.

Nattuvangam especially, is borne out of inner experience, and your interest in it. You should start reciting the Jathis you have learnt, and a good percissionist can help you understand the fundamentals of rhythm.

I really love my guru's nattuvangam - Kalaimamani Indra Rajan. She has so much life in her recitation. If you are in Madras you can contact her and get some advise. This is her cell no: 09444381116

Good Luck....
