contemporary dance

I 've been a contemporary dancer/choreographer for 7 years. But i'm still trying to find what dance is really all about. When dancers give a 1 hour presentation, how many compromises, adjustments, do they go through? Just for that one hr.. Is dance ultimately for the self ...just trying to proove an expression to an audience as justifiable? Or does it have a responsibility to positively touch lives and be aware of how society ( the audience's ) needs may be. I just came back from the US training with many renowed Dance masters...but have become quiet after returning. In the end it all seems that each master has a style of his own which he believes in and a following of people associate with as well. So they become well known. Those who have a style not "flowing" with the times, don't get the recognition in their lifetime, but may be later...
What really is dance? Aren't we "performing" everyday? ANY VIEWS TO SHARE?
