I think the way you are currently teaching is a great way to entice the interest of young children. Making curriculum modifications to suit the specific learning styles/situations for different children is the very hallmark of successful teaching... and if you need to make the modifications in the early stages by referring to shikhara as a "thumbs up" for the time being-- why not. You've indicated that you'll eventually teach the right terms for the mudra hastas, so I think it's perfectly acceptable (in my opinion).
You're creative and that's going to go a long way in sustaining the interest of children in the art form.
