I was awestruck to see the number of people who feel to withstand in this field of dance requires"u to be brahmin, and u to have contacts, and not to forget, cash!!!!!!!!
Funny ,when the propagators of the bharathanatyam art form until the early 1950's and 60's were nattuvanars who belonged to one of the "MOST BACKWARD CASTES",the ISAIVELLALARS-THE PEOPLE WHO MADE A LIVING OUT OF MUSIC AND THE ARTS.These erstwhile gurus were indeed from the much looked down community of "devadasis".this community was so shunned not only by the brahmins but by all classes, you know "for the obvious reason".
Now look at the dance scene being dominated by the "brahmins-as mentioned by many around here",the same people who shunned and put down the art and practicers of the art.
And most ridiculous is the fact that those people having the lineage as those great gurus, are virtually ignorant about the artform.Very few people of that lineage are to be found in the dance scene!!!!!!!!
Truly, when I,grand daughter of shri i S.k.Rajarathnam pillai, said i wanted to take up dance ,i was dealt with by the entire family for being a fool.Indeed my grandfather is said to have told his children to pursue studies and get out of the vicious circle that my grandpa had to face, while indeed he was propagating the art to the "brahmins".Now isnt it funny, this is the art of my ancestors,a culture that has been in my family for years, the art that i understand, love and clearly have a right to take up,seems to be the last thing i am allowed to do.Please do put down ur views if any.
