Dancer 007,

Re: I also have a deep respect for PS and would love to study with her. However, I cannot believe that her work is the final word. As you observe, how can we understand the movements fully without a thorough ananlysis of the ancient systems of music?

Analysis of music is a subject many learned scholars are into, most have not recognized yet, that dance is a perfected music. I compare it to the evolution of music video clips, they are a perfection of song that no artist can do without nowadays. If you want to top the charts, you have to produce clips. And dance clips always make it to the top, see Beyonce, Rihanna, Shakira, Fergie, the Pussycat Dolls and others in popmusic. Indian musicians seem to have realized this long before, check some of the vids that are put on Youtube right now, like AMRAPALI- Dance competition

If you google for it, you find that music archaeology is a very young scientific discipline, but they discuss findings long before any shastra was written. There is reason to believe that early men 600.000 years ago had the same musical hearing as today. 9000 years ago the seven notes of the scale can be proven on chinese flutes with drilling methods of old europe, this music has remained basically the same since, in western and eastern music, even the common note C was used then. Since music can be traced with numbers it is much easier to date. I find that dance postures could possibly be dated earlier by way of music, not so much by sculptures. Since Indra and his time can be traced archaeologically, I have hope that the music of that time can be used to prove some of the dance traditionally ascribed to him.

Re: What did Guru Gyan Prakash's work consist of?

I have written about this in this thread within the last month. I have a source that claims to be able to provide DVD of some of his choreographies, like Mesphal Bhagavan ( Biblical theme on Mary Magdalene). But it might be expensive. I know from another source that no book was written yet, I know where some of his manuscripts are kept in a museum. I hope to find out more in time or visit the Mumbai ashram?

Re: I would like to hear more about your studies. Yes, it seems that music, song & movement are inseperable. What do you know about ancient Indian music? Are there CD's out there of research artists who have been working with it?
Please post your email address & I will send you a note so we can further discuss the topic.

I am at times very busy so I cannot reply immediatly, but I know of no CD`s out yet. In years to come I hope to do a DVD with some gifted artists? If you or anyone is interested send me an email to sa_ga_g@yahoo.co.in

Thanks
