 Dear Vaish, mallika,

As far as I know about varnams, Tana varnam is NOT used for dance. It has more emphasis on the swaras rather than the lyrics. Only pallavi, anupallavi and charanam have sahithya, where as in a padha varnam which is commonly used in dance, it has sahidya also for the mukthayi and charana swaras. Also, Dharu varnam and tana varnam are different types of varnams. Dharu varnam can also be used for dance. As opposed to padha varnam, dharu varnam has jathis already composed in it. (after the mukthayi swaram, there's a jathi then the sahithya. they will be sung in first speed and then in second speed). An example of a dharu varnam is "maathe malaythvaja," in raga kamas. I believe a padajathi varnam and daru varnam are the same thing.

Hope this helps
