 Hi Chitra,

Normally, for any dance competition in India, a "Varnam" (extract) is always performed. This will be a shorter varnam with two "Jathis" and some abhinaya piece. If there is time, it will be better to perform a varnam than a padam. What you have to do is edit the Varnam to about 9.45 minutes or so if the time limit is 10 minutes.

If she has learnt a varnam already, please edit it and ask her to perform.

I can suggest one or two varnams that are good for this: Sitha Rama - This is a good one where Sitha Swayamvaram is shown as Abhinaya.

There is a good one one "Hanuman" when he meets Sita.

There is another beautiful piece on "Madurai Meenakshi " Maye En Manam" where killing of Mahishasura is shown.

There are some good ones on "Nava Rasa" Varnams which can be performed.

Why not ask your dance master about it?
