 hi janeni,
v r talking abt this issue as global.
v r talking abt classical indian arts and not bharatanatyam alone. anyone can correct me if iam wrong. as i said before, iam sure bharatanatyam is better off than the other lasya based classical forms, leave alone classical music.
many of the people have contributed to the fact, that outstanding and popular name doesnt mean popular dancer. so, only people who watch can only decide whether the performer/artist is good or not when they watch- and thats the crux of the problem.
i was working till very recently in india, before i moved to australia.most of the companies in india has saturday and sunday off- thats when the programs are held.
i agree to the distance issue u raised. may be thats y the abhinaya based items are less preferred, as no one can make out the expressions, only the poses can be seen from a distance.
again, i disagree to what u say abt live orchestra. u can find many a talent there. when one works really hard and is truly talented- their talent shows- beyond all bad equipments- this is what i tell my kids- if u dance well, no body will notice what and how u r wearing, but just ur dance and u should dance so that one notices only that. handsome is what handsome does.
i believe, dance is the interpretation of music and lyrics- their mood and meaning. so language should not be a barrier. infact to this point, even the mudras used in dance are quite uncomprehensible for a layman. thats when the dancer has to show her talent.i feel its like playing dumbcheredes. u know the story, but u should express it with such detail that ur audiance should understand it,without u even opening your mouth.
art knows no boundries,no barriers, no language.
as for the above mentioned dancers, i think priyadarshini is good and i like her,i like anita too. its a matter of personal taste and opinion.this applies to our audiance too. i really dont care abt their personal life, especially when i'm discussing abt their dancing abilities.
greedy. hmm....i am discussing the possibilities of art-classical arts- to be accepted as a profession, job and get paid for it. my teachers though quoted fee per class, never really counted and this is what i too learnt from my teachers- if someone is really interestd in art, then one should go out of their way to help them.but, money i demand from those, who have resources and only reluctance stops them.many will agree that there will be some seriousness, when one pays or gets paid-a sort of commitment.
the place i stay, most of the dancers/gurus/they dont help other dancers/teachers, for the fear of losing the little they are making. i have personally experianced this and hold no grudge. there is only one other teacher here, her students approached me saying, they will have one class with me and one with her( v both do different styles) iam not into poaching. when i sought her help and guidance she turned a cold shoulder. has anybody else faced similar situation?
