If I may , the term is "Salangai" in Tamil- meant "Dancing bells" and it was given to a student only during her/his debut performance or "Arangetram". A special puja for the Salangai was done and then given to the student to be worn for the very first time during her debut performance. Well, students did not get their arangetram done until they had undergone years and years of training and were good at the art form and worthy of dancing on the stage.
