According to Kali Kautuvam, the rishis Pathanjali and Vyagraprada, in a joint venture, did a yaga and got a chance to see Shiva and Shakthi dance. And it is from this collective meditation/vision that the 108 karanas were first documented, and enshrined in Chidambaram.

Now, tell me, do you think Urvasi or Menaka can dance like Shiva and Shakthi? This is why the rishis were not interested in the inferior stuff.
