I wanted to address Shubha's statement.

They "cannot film and make DVDs freely of the age old traditional compositions" not because they hate "fame and money" but because these people have had a stupid idea that they could get more "fame and money" by limiting access to their expertise. They thought that it would be better (for business competition reasons) to restrict the number of the sadir artistes, so they tried to teach as little as possible. Selfishness was what destroyed Sadir.

Now, of course, they are not interested in spreading their art by producing DVDs of their and their students' performances because everyone would see that they forgot how to dance.

As for the "non-competitive" natya, why then even the Lord Nataraja has had competitions with his consort, and why do the apsaras have competitions too?

P.S. One may argue if one needs to go to the USA where the shrewd American businessmen offer the most shallow courses in Cultural Analysis in the world...
