December 13, 2010

Bharatanatyam dancer Padmaja Suresh performed on December 10, 2010 at Chowdiah Hall in Bangalore, as part of the Laadli Media Awards for Gender Sensitivity organized by Population First.

She presented three distinct dance numbers highlighting the role of a woman. The first was from the Puranas, the Shakti images were drawn and the Goddess as Durga Chamundi was portrayed. The next number was a poem by Subramanya Bharatiyar on the mother's love for the child integrated with another poem of the Chinmaya Mission - Matrustavanam on the devotion of a worthy child after growing up into a fine woman towards her mother who nurtured all the superlative qualities in her from birth, childhood and youth. The last number was on Mother India, Vande Mataram.

Padmaja was accompanied by Bharati Venugopal on vocal, Srihari on mridangam, Madusudan on violin, Narasimhamurty on flute and Chandana on nattuvangam. The items were much appreciated and the audience felt the suitability of the choreography for the occasion that honoured women from the media who had contributed to Indian women in various ways.

Padmaja Suresh recently received the Kiran Achievement Award from Women's International Network on November 25, 2010 at Teenmurthy Bhavan, for excellence and contribution by sharing the art of Bharatanatyam with lesser-sections of children through the institute's project Kalachaitanya.
