International Seminar on Yoga Therapy in the current millennium 
and annual meet of the Indian Academy of Yoga at Varanasi

Yogacharya Dr Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani was honored with the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Yoga at its Annual Meet held at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India from 12th to 14th March 2005. He thus joins the legion of eminent Fellows of the Academy that include BKS Iyengar, T KV Desikachar, Dr B Ramamurthy, Dr Georg Feuerstein, Dr H R Nagendra, Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, Dr M V Bhole, Prof B K Anand and Dr W Selvamurthy.

The colorful convocation was held on the 12th evening at the Malaviya Bhavan, the premises of the Yoga Sadhana Kendra, the Yoga wing of Banaras Hindu University. Prof T R Anantaraman the president of the Academy and former Vice Chancellor, BHU in the presence of Dr I M Gupta, ex Dean, Institute of Medical Sciences and Prof KK Sharma, Director, Yoga Sadhana Kendra bestowed the fellowship on Ananda and eight others including S K Jindel of Jaipur and Dr Madanmohan of JIPMER, Pondicherry.

The International Seminar on Yoga therapy had a great many stimulating presentations by eminent Yogis and Yoga scientists such as Prof T R Anantaraman, Dr R G Singh, Dr I M Gupta, Dr Ganesh Sankar, Dr G P Mathur, Dr C Giri, S K Jindel, Narain Prakash and Narasimha Murthi of the Yoga Sadhana Kendra.

More than 250 participants benefited from the three-day program that had lectures, demonstrations and lecture demonstrations as well as stimulating Gita Chanting sessions. Ananda presented a guest lecture entitled “Yoga for health in children” that was chaired by the eminent pediatric surgeon, Dr Choodamani Gopal as well as two other presentations entitled “Therapeutic benefits of Pranayama” and “Meeting points of Yoga and modern medicine”. 

Prof Anantaraman’s presentation on the Gita and Yoga, Dr R G Singh's presentation on Yoga for renal protection and SK Jindel's presentation  “Uddiyana, the supreme Bandha” were well appreciated by the eminent participants from all over India as well as the handful of foreign participants from Japan and other countries. 

The Annual Meet was ably organised by Dr RG Singh, General Secretary, Indian Academy of Yoga with cooperation from the staff of the Yoga Sadhana Kendra and Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU. The meet was sponsored by the Medical Council of India and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
