Poet Ulloor devoted a lifetime of effort to write a detailed history of Malayalam literature in 5 volumes. He was probably the first to examine the records of the Padmanabha temple at Trivandrum where payments made to various artistes have been meticulously recorded. It was thus discovered that payments were made to Kathakali artistes more than 270 years ago for staging Unnayi Warrier's 'Nalacharitam'.

Kaplingad Namboodri (1729 - 1789) was a Brahmin who was equally well versed in dance, music and literature. He worked in cooperation with Kathakali dancers and set up a Kathakali yogam.
